What is an X-Ray Technician?
X-ray technicians are trained to operate x-ray and other diagnostic imaging equipment that allows medical personnel to view the interior of a patient’s body for diagnosis of diseases, injuries, and other conditions. As a technician, it is your job to capture and develop clear internal images so that a qualified practicioner can discuss what has been found with the patient. This job requires excellent communication and interpersonal skills, as a large part of the job focuses on helping patients prepare for examinations, taking on actions such as removing jewelry and drinking contrast mediums. On the technical side, you will be expected to keep patient records and ensure that x-ray equipment is properly maintained.
How to Become an X-Ray Technician: The Required Degrees for a X-Ray Technician
Although some employers offer x-ray technician training, the vast majority prefer to hire candidates with previous formal training. Most training programs will be two-year associate degrees, but you will find a wide variety of programs, with ranges from certificates to bachelor’s degrees, and 1 to 4 year durations. Most formal training programs are accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology, so be sure to verify that your program of choice is accredited by this institution or a suitable equivalent. In many states, you will be required to pass an exam administered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists in order to become licensed as a x-ray technician. This same organization offers a voluntary certification that is highly desired by employers. This certification is available to technicians that have graduated from an accredited program, pass an exam and complete ongoing continuing education requirements.
X-Ray Technician Salary and Jobs: How much money do x-ray technicians make?
X-ray technicians enjoy an average annual salary of about $48,000. The lowest is generally around $32,000, and the highest about $69,000. Finding employment as an x-ray technichian is fairly easy, as x-ray and other diagnostic imaging technology is in high demand nearly everywhere. While about 60 percent of x-ray technician jobs are in hospitals, positions are often available in locations like dental offices, clinics, and assisted-living homes. In the next decade, the x-ray technician profession is expected to increase by about 15 percent, which is faster than the average for all occupations, due primarily to a growing elderly population in need of diagnostic imaging.
